You are the creator of your worlds, whether real or imagined.
While this totally applies to fiction, it also applies to real life. But it seldom feels that way.
I have been working on an epic sci-fi story for almost 4 years. Up until a few months ago, I didn’t have a title for it. But wow is it fun to write.
I’ve taken a few classic sci-fi tropes and stood them on their head. There is an alien race with no gender whatsoever (for whom I created gender-neutral pronouns). One of my main characters is a middle-aged lesbian. Overall I don’t do more than provide a very general description of any of the humans in my story so that the reader can envision them however they may choose.
I am working now on breaking down this work into individual novels. Book 1 is ready to send to the editor, and book 2 is assembled and ready for MY edits. Still working on the overarching story.
The series is called The Void Incursion (took me over three years to come up with that name). Each book will have a name of its own.
Book 1 has now had three permutations of its name. The first was Points of Origin.
Taken from the game of chess, book 2 is called Critical Position. Because I used a chess term, I determined that ALL of the books will be named with chess terms.
Book 1 got renamed Irregular Opening. I like it, but something about it is just…not quite there. Thus, after some debate, and a conversation with my wife, Book 1 will be called Opening Gambit.
The point of this is that I am the creator of the world, the series, and as such get to choose what to name it.
Applying the creative power to real life
One of the best things about being a writer of fiction is that you get to create whole worlds. The characters and the places they exist, the environments they call home are wholly yours to build, create, and control.
The thing is, you and I actually have the same power in the real world. But because we live in a fear-based society that gets hyper-focused on lack and scarcity, we get disempowered by outside forces far too easily.
How does that work? Look at how many “authorities” of one stripe or another discuss the things that are lacking. They talk about all the things that are scarce, or becoming scarce, constantly. You get inundated by messages of not enough, and rather than empowering people to develop and create more, they focus instead on a hoarder mentality. Take it all, take it now, before it’s gone. Keep the “other” from getting it.
In truth, this is total BS. This is an abundant Universe. All of the things you are told are lacking or scarce are not – but the artifice of that lack and scarcity that gets “created” is used to disempower and control you.
Don’t believe me? Take energy resources. A hundred years ago coal and oil were the main sources of power. Now we can get nearly as much power, if not more, from solar, wind, and other renewable resources. If coal and fossil fuels run out there are alternatives which are already in use. Imagine what hasn’t been discovered yet to do the same thing even more efficiently?
This is proof of the abundance of the Universe. These alternatives, though they have existed longer than humankind has, came about from someone’s creative power relatively recently.
Your imagination can become reality
In The Void Incursion series, I utilize three different ideas for faster-than-light travel. They are based on pure fantasy and speculation, as well as some roots in scientific theorems. Imagination, today…but who’s to say that one day we won’t figure out how to travel faster than light?
Many things that were dreamed up by a person or persons at some time or other, dismissed as pure fantasy or some wild idea, in time became reality. Take the device you are reading this post on, for example. Whether computer, PDA, tablet, or phone, that device was nothing but a fanciful idea not so long ago.
I got my first personal computer, an Apple IIe, in 1985. It had 128k of memory. My iPhone, which is pocket-sized, has 64GB of memory. That’s like comparing a horse-drawn carriage to a super-sonic fighter jet. Similarly, the thumb drive in my pocket is 128GB of storage, compared to the 157KB of storage on the Apple IIe’s 5.25” floppy disks. Cutting edge tech of just over thirty years ago is antiquated today, due to someone imagining and creating this and bringing it into reality.
The world in which you live, where you breathe, eat, sleep, play, and so on, is also yours to create. Sometimes it does not feel that way, because it’s too easy to sink into the collective consciousness of the world.
What is collective consciousness?
Reality is entirely based on individual perception of it. Yes, this could turn into a really deep philosophical discussion, but that’s not where I want to take this, so bear with me here.
When you form a community, be it a family, tribe, religion, nation, or what-have-you, a part of that community comes together with shared beliefs, and similar (albeit unique to each individual) understanding of the world you occupy. This, in turn, creates a collective consciousness.
This is why some people see Donald Trump as a savior, while others see him as an unstable lunatic. Different elements of the collective consciousness accept the reality of Trump and his administration through wildly different and sometimes frighteningly opposite perspectives.
Just to complicate things, there are individuals and groups of people who desire to control the collective, and as such strive to disempower individuals. This, when all is said and done, is the best reason for recognizing your power as a creator.
You are not disempowered by life circumstances unless you choose to be. I recognize that in many cases that’s a far easier matter to discuss than act upon, but that doesn’t lessen or change the truth of it.
I have worlds inside my head that I write about and create, and have been for most of my life. Yet I am also working on being more empowered to be the creator of my life itself, and make the most of it that I can.
Mindfulness is the key
Writing about sci-fi and fantasy worlds brings them alive. They leave the place they exist inside my own mind and get shared with you.
The thing is, I have the power to also create THIS world, or more specifically my little corner of this world. How? By employing mindfulness.
Mindfulness is being aware of what you are thinking and what and how you are feeling. This awareness allows you to then influence and control thoughts and emotions and from there the actions you take. In taking on that influence and control, you also take on more power to be the creator of the life you most desire to live in.
Consciousness creates reality. Mindfulness is your conscious reality creator. It can take effort, at first, to be more mindful…but once you are, and you work with it, you can turn fantasy into reality, and create a better, more fulfilling life and reality for yourself.
You are the creator of your worlds, imagined and empirical. Take that to heart, and be the best you that you can be.
