A recent post on Facebook a friend put up asked us to describe our day job, but make it sound evil. My response?
Words must be wrestled into submission. Like a snake in the grass, bad grammar slithers silently through, hoping to slay the otherwise sensible paragraphs.
Why yes, I am a content editor in the world of my day job. But, even as a writer, I am always wrestling words into submission. Editing is being the predator attacking prey. In this case, poor grammar, typos, and various other writing errors.
Lately I have been focusing on writing more. Mostly this has involved nonfiction, as I am publishing works at The Ramblings of the Titanium Don, but also adding more blogs at Medium.
As part of a challenge I presented to myself last week, I have been writing for a blog post every weekday. Monday through Friday words have appeared on one or both sites. I decided to keep up the momentum, and have continued this practice for this week, too.
Now I need to work on more editing for the various works that are complete but unedited, as well as working on my fiction. The Void Incursion sci-fi extravaganza is not going to write itself, but it has gotten very little attention of late.
However, more words are finding their way from my head to the screen. This is most definitely a step in the right direction. Why? Because I am not just a mild-mannered boutique marketing firm content editor – I am A Writer!
Words are my superpower
On a recent visit with a close friend, we both found ourselves at one point playing the same word game on our phones. She’s really good…but I work a tad faster. To the point where, after watching me complete a word puzzle in less than a minute, she uttered “I kinda hate you right now” or something similar.
But words are not just what come out of my mouth or my head. They ARE my superpower. Writing is what I do, and it is my specialty. What sometimes seems super-easy to me I realize is not that for everyone else.
On more than one occasion a friend or coworker has asked me to write something for them, be it a sentence, paragraph, or press release. They asked me because, while it would have taken them an hour, it took me minutes.
We all have skills and talents that are fairly unique to us. We can each do things that to us seem pretty damned easy, but others see as a skill. These might be our superpowers.
I love the written word. There are a lot of other authors out there I have tons of respect for, and I am passionate not just about what I write, but what I read.
Yet talking about these talents straddles a fine line. That line? Competence and bragging. Am I being an arrogant braggart when I talk about this, or a modest adept? I believe that this is what I am meant to do with my life, so to that end have been working on putting more time into writing.
This is why I use caution with what I post online. Actions, words and intent are important, and I am striving to develop a role for myself as a writer and practitioner of conscious reality creation, mindfulness, and awareness.
Of course, at the same time, I also wish to cultivate my role as a fiction writer, too.
Let’s make the words speak
It is entirely up to me to make the time to both write AND edit my own work. The process of focusing more on the former is underway…now I need to also work on the latter. Void Incursion won’t take shape unless I mold it with editing, and I will never manage to get Harbinger out there if I don’t put time into it.
Oh, and I also intend to have You Are Amazing ready for pre-sales in a couple weeks. The goal is to publish it in May. The audiobook recording process is moving along halfway decently – but, irony, I need to edit that, too.
Words spoken or written – I am wrestling them. But that’s what I do. It brings me joy, which is why this is the 2nd blog I have written and posted today (the first is over at Medium.com). THIS is that threshold I have written about before. This is the cusp of going from almost living in the reality I desire to, and ACTUALLY living there.
The only way to go from here is forwards. Thank you for reading these words, and taking part in my ongoing journey. Thank you for joining me.
