One of the best things about life is learning.
Change is the one and only constant in the entire Universe. It can, will, and does happen all the time. Much of the change that occurs is wholly, utterly, and completely outside of your control.
However, not all change is out of your control. When all is said and done, you ultimately choose who, what, where, how, and why you are.
This is, admittedly, easier for some than others. Privilege comes into play here because society demands that you must work to live, which unfortunately translates all too often to living to work. There is, however, a truth that applies to everyone everywhere.
There is always something new to learn.
The physical world is full of people, places, and things to experience. That increases exponentially when you get into the mental, emotional, and spiritual worlds. Science is full to overflowing of facts, figures, concepts, theorems, and other ideas to learn and explore. Nature is abundant with information. Creatives drop new ideas, stories, works of art, and more to inspire and empower learning.
I love that there is always something new to learn. Why? Because it means that even in the most hopeless, uncertain, and terrifying times, there is something to learn out there. That can be incredibly empowering.
Subtle, obvious, and everything in between
When it comes to finding things to learn, you have choices veritably beyond reckoning. Pick a topic, any topic, and you will find more to learn than you would believe.
Take something utterly simple like salt. Things you can learn about salt include how it alters flavors, what it does for the human body, its chemical makeup, where it can be found, how it can be removed from water, what forms it can take – and this is just a start. That’s just salt, something common and regularly encountered.
What about the intangibles? I’ve written for years now about how feelings are comprised of both a “what” and a “how.” What you feel and how you feel have vast variables. For example, anger. That’s what. Yet the trigger for the feeling, the cause of the “what”, can come from innumerable sources. Then we get to “how”. How anger feels is hugely variable, from seething to rage, red-hot to ice-cold, and everything in between.
Amidst all of this, there’s something to be learned. Lessons learned can be subtle, obvious, or anywhere between these extremes. The impact of what you learn, likewise, can be subtle or blatant. Things learned can change your perspective, beliefs, values, habits, approach, intent, and beyond.
There is always something new to learn. This can be hugely impactful in your life, as it opens the door for change and growth.
Learn by creating
Every book that I write teaches me new things. Different approaches to formatting, new ways to explore characters, marketing ideas, and more. Likewise, every blog I compose helps me learn new ways to communicate my thoughts, share my ideas, and fulfill my need to be of service to other people.
I learn by creating. Most artists, I think, learn by creating. What goes into making a painting, sculpting a figure, writing a novel, and any other artistic pursuit helps you learn new things.
When I learn new things, I get to share new things. That empowers me by putting things out into the world to help empower others.
Some people find the notion of always having something new to learn terrifying. This ties into the often-scary notion of infinity. This, in turn, ties into other huge philosophical questions about why we are here, purpose, and so on. Something new to learn becomes a source of discomfort and uncertainty.
Creating is an expression of learning. Creatives, I believe, see the potential rather than the uncertainty of the idea that there is always something new to learn. Finding this scary or exciting is a choice.
Your mileage may vary
Perspective differs for everyone. As Albert Einstein put it,
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”
Reality as we perceive is as different as all of us are from one another. That’s why I can see learning as one of the best things about life while someone else can see it as one of the worst.
It all ties into change and how you approach it. Fear or excitement? Trepidation or confidence? Times, situations, and more make this hugely variable.
The creative process is a learning process. This is part of why creatives tend to be progressive. Because you work with learning and change to make new things in the world. Even when times are highly uncertain, there are new things to learn that can change your life for the better. When you are changed and changing, the world around you can and does, too.
Who knows what new things you might learn today?
Thanks for reading. As I share my creative journey with you, I conclude with this: How are you inspired to be your own creator – whatever form that takes?
