I am deeply distressed by the news today. One reason I am so deeply distressed is that there is, realistically, little to nothing I can do about it. I can vote, attend protests, and offer my support to those most impacted by these developments.
That written, I can also do this: As a white, middle-aged, cis-gendered male, I fully and completely support a woman’s right to her body autonomy. Women have every right to decide for themselves what is right for them – and that’s the end-all, be-all.
If a woman wants an abortion, to get her tubes tied, to have her uterus removed, to take birth control, or to do anything whatsoever she wants to her body – that is all that matters. No man should be dictating laws and restrictions when it comes to the health of women.
If you believe for one minute overturning legal abortion is about saving unborn babies – you are being fooled. Ask yourself this – why are there NO LAWS AT ALL that suggest punishing the men who donate the sperm to impregnate a woman? Why the hell do rapists get rights to the children they force onto a woman? This is about control and subjugation – period.
Speak up, speak out
Don’t be complicit, men. STAND UP for the basic human rights and dignities every single human being deserves. Speak out, join the protests, and vote out the people harming women and their rights.
Because guess what? They won’t stop here. How long before they start attacking LGBTQA+ rights more blatantly? How long before they claim “states’ rights” and overturn marriage equality? The highest court in the United States is run by the minority – and they will erode all protections to create the horrid, conservative, right-wing, backasswards nation they think will rule the world at the right hand of Jesus or whatever.
The majority MUST NOT REMAIN SILENT. We must make it known that we will not allow those we care about to be hurt by this unkind, uncompassionate, regressive minority.
That written – I support all of you and your rights to equality and the same protections I enjoy as a middle-aged white guy. I will do whatever I can to support you and help you to keep what you have and gain more of what you deserve. Because that is not just your right – it is the right thing for everyone.
