The geek is strong with this one.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a five-year-old watching Star Wars for the first time.
For more than forty years, this has been a part of my life story. It was the universe that Star Wars brought to me that would inspire me to become a writer.
I have seen every single movie multiple times (even the less-than-stellar prequels). Despite this next movie closing out the primary saga, I cannot begin to explain just how excited seeing the teaser-trailer for Episode IX (Revealed to be titled The Rise of Skywalker) has made me.
This is the kind of joy that drives me to create. It is the giddy sense of excitement for a thing both familiar and unknown. And this is not the only conclusion to an epic saga occurring in 2019.
The last season of Game of Thrones is about to begin. I have read the books, don’t expect the last two, but am REALLY looking forward to the conclusion. And then, we get Avengers:Endgame in a couple weeks. While not the end of a saga, it is the conclusion of one phase of the MCU.
In case this is not abundantly clear: I AM A GREAT BIG GEEK! While on the one hand I am feeling distracted and want to go watch The Rise of Skywalker trailer for a fourth or fifth or sixth time, I should be writing.
While I write non-fiction like my blogs to inspire people and help with mindfulness and conscious reality creation, I write fiction to produce the reaction I am having to the upcoming glorious geekery.
As my wife pointed out, on like our third date, I am an unapologetic geek.
The geek shall inherit the earth
While there are some who have taken their fandoms to unfortunate extremes, and some obnoxious behaviors, most of us simply love all this represents. Incredible stories of amazing worlds and relatable (and sometimes totally un-relatable) characters; action, adventure, growth and development we can follow and enjoy; all of this is what makes for memorable fiction.
In many respects, comic book superheroes, Star Wars and other sci-fi aliens, and fantasy adventures are modern fairy tales. I suspect they will endure in much the same way. Why? Because humans love stories that tantalize and invigorate the imagination.
As far as we know, no other creatures on Earth have the type of sentience and imaginations that we do. This is why we have the tools we do, live in every possible climate variation on the planet, communicate instantly globally, and travel great distances in short spans of time. Someone imagined these things, and action was taken to make them into reality.
As a child, Star Wars really opened up my imagination. Since then, I have fallen in love with the sci-fi and fantasy genre, and written my own works on that line. I continue writing my stories, and look forward to sharing them, hopefully with an ever-growing audience.
This week I wrote about knowing your why. The joy and excitement I have been feeling since watching a two minute and four second teaser trailer is it. This my truth, and seeing it in such a condensed, encapsulated manner makes me smile.
This feeling is what it’s all about.
Embrace the geek
I have been a brand of geek, or nerd, all of my life. Whether it was theatre or writing or radio or medieval reenactment, I am that guy. You won’t find me home on a weekend watching the game, but you may find me dressed in funny clothes fighting with a rapier. The soundtrack I tend to write to is a mix of Russian classical, movie scores, and similar scattered bits.
Why am I sharing this with you now? Because it is important to be who we are. So many people live life behind a mask, or live a double-life because they worry about professionalism and such. I know that can be totally valid, but not being who you are can lead to anxiety, depression, and more.
Everyone needs a place where they can be themselves. If you cannot do so in your everyday life, it’s important to find and make the time to do so. This is a part of self-care, and it’s important to recognize your worth. You deserve and are worthy of being you.
I need to catch my breath, get it back together, and return to writing today. You Are Amazing – How to Create a Kickass Life is nearly ready for pre-release, and the audiobook is coming along as well. I need to continue working on Void Incursion I – Points of Origin, and get it ready to publish.
Thanks for letting me geek out here. Thank you for reading these words, and taking part in my ongoing journey. Thank you for joining me.
