Keep this in mind when you debate if you should start a writing career and creating – or not.
I’ve met a lot of would-be writers over the years.
Numerous people who have said in one form or another, wow, I really want to write – or – I have this great idea for a story – or – I’d love to be a writer, but – or similar.
Likewise, I’ve encountered this with other creatives. They have a vision, a dream, some idea or other that they desire to do – but – they haven’t a clue where to start.
As the song Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music opens,
“Let’s start at the very beginning – a very good place to start.”
What does that mean? It means the only place to begin is at the beginning.
Everyone starts as a beginner
Every single creative, entrepreneurial, subject matter expert, and all else started as a beginner.
That’s hard to see today. Lots of people appear to be insta-famous because of the visceral immediacy of the internet and social media. I mean, who heard of “influencers” in relation to Tik Tok or Instagram just a few years ago?
But here we are. All sorts of people seem to have recognition of their skills or crafts seemingly at the very beginning. And we start to believe they were always graced with such skill and talent.
With only the very rarest exceptions – they weren’t. They started as a beginner in the beginning.
You might have an inherent skill, ability, or talent. Plenty of people do. But even with that – you are a beginner when you begin.
I started writing sci-fi when I was 9 years old. Hell, I still have Wildfire – the 50-page, illustrated novel that I produced.
It’s not very good. I mean, okay, for a 9-year-old, it doesn’t suck. But it’s still very much the work of a beginner.
I imagine that Stephen King, NK Jemisin, Neil Gaiman, and most other authors started as a beginner before honing their impressive craft. Likewise, the very first works of Picasso, Cassatt, and Warhol were clearly created by beginners.
Nobody is a fully-formed creative. We all begin as beginners. Even with inherent talent – it only improves via practice.
Thus, the best time to start your creative work – writing, painting, that business idea, or what have you – is today.
Your writing career or other creative endeavor awaits you
Consciousness creates reality.
To many people, this is a statement of hooky-spooky bullshit. But the Law of Attraction is like the Law of Gravity – you don’t need to believe in it for it to function. You can disbelieve in gravity – but you won’t suddenly float away off the face of the Earth.
The point of this is that whatever you desire to be, have, or do – you are empowered to make it so.
This is where lots of people get lost. How do you make it so? That’s not something I know – because my how won’t be yours. But one reason that I share my process as I do is to help anyone who seeks to take a similar life path to avoid some of the pitfalls I experienced.
Your writing career, brilliant business idea, artistic career, or whatever you desire is out there in the ethers, waiting for you to choose the path to it. Or not.
Also – there’s probably more than one path available to the same destination. If two people are starting from the same starting point – even if they are side-by-side as they begin – they are still on individual, different paths that will vary in numerous ways.
Because consciousness creates reality – if you have a dream, which is a product of your subconscious mind – when you put conscious, mindful effort into it you can make it your reality.
We live in an abundant Universe. All lack, scarcity, and insufficiency we perceive is artificial. But the how and why are so variable that they can feel like almost insurmountable obstacles. But they’re not.
Today is a good first day for your writing career to begin
There is a great Chinese Proverb that I strive to take to heart.
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.”
If you have an idea to start a writing career, creative or entrepreneurial business, or anything else of that nature – there’s no better time to begin than now. Today.
If you are unsure where to start, when to start, or how to start – that’s normal. I don’t think anyone has the answers. Thus, why not start today?
This, to me, is the very essence of my favorite Yoda quote,
“Do or do not. There is no try.”
You can try to start all you want. But trying is not doing. If you desire to start writing, painting, and/or creating – then do it. Today.
Your first work might be lacking. It might need a lot of editing and revision. But until you start it, you won’t ever get to that point.
I’ve written and self-published 11 sci-fi and fantasy novels since 2014. Three were published in 2019, while another 6 were published in 2021. I have 2 more that I finished writing awaiting a trip to the editor, one being written now, and 9 more novels plotted.
The first novel I published in 2014 was Seeker – book 1 of my Source Chronicles series. It is also the first book I ever had professionally edited.
I started writing it in 1998. The first two chapters of the original draft no longer exist in the completed work – but that’s where I began it when I started so long ago.
You can start at any time. So why not begin today?
Every day is a new day
For various reasons, I sometimes miss a day of writing.
I used to berate myself, get upset, and think and say unpleasant things to and about myself when this happened. However – I’ve worked to stop doing that. Maybe yesterday I didn’t get it done. Today can be the first day of the rest of my writing career.
Every. Single. Day. Will. Be. Today. That means that tomorrow becomes today. So, there are lots and lots of opportunities for you to start.
This can be terrifying for lots of different reasons. That’s okay – it’s a perfectly natural feeling. The question is – will you let the fear stop you?
Many people do. But it’s a choice you get to make. And you can make it today.
I mean, sure, you can put it off and let the idea never come to fruition. But then – you’re denying it to the world. And the world is as worthy and deserving of your creativity as you are of succeeding through and from it.
Today is a damned good day to begin whatever endeavor you desire. Start writing, painting, or creating that amazing business you’ve always dreamed of – today. Because you deserve to shine as brightly as you’re capable of shining.
Why not begin the first day of your writing career (or other creative pursuits) today?
